New York Times “Big Data” Event: Dissecting the Tweets

by Steve Broback on November 22, 2010

Times Open is “a series of events surveying the current landscape on a variety of topics, including Geolocation, Open Government, the Real-Time Web and Big Data. We’ll talk with people actively working in each field, look at what’s coming up next, and drink some beer with our fellow software developers, technologists and code hackers.”

The latest one covered “Big Data.” It was held on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 6:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m.

The next one is “Hack Day” to be held Saturday, Dec. 4 10:00 a.m.–Midnight

I would have loved to have been there, but regrettably was 3,000 miles away. In my attempt to get the most info I could, using the search API, I sucked down 151 Tweets containing the following terms:
timesopen
todata
to2.0
NYTimes big data

You can download all the tweets as a CSV file here.

Within those tweets these were the most prominent links referenced:

Digital Keys for Unlocking the Humanities’ Riches

GigaOm: Beyond Hadoop: Next-Generation Big Data Architectures

Drew Conway: Where People Share Links About NYC

Lev Manovich: new york times: the next big idea in humanities is data

NyTimes: The Congress API

These were the terms most used:
